Изначально я искал какой-нибудь плагин или даже виджет для организации небольшой встроенной в сайт галерейки. Тогда-то и наткнулся на вот эту штуковину кавайным названием.
Итак, что нам предлагает Plogger.
- Плоггер соответствует тем запросам, что я искал – его можно встраивать в существующие сайты. А можно использовать и совершенно самостоятельно, оба варианта у меня уже успешно реализованы.
- Плоггер умеет по-умному интерпретировать контент. Он не будет отображать пустые альбомы и коллекции. И если у вас будет несколько пустых коллекций и альбом, в котором несколько изображений, скрипт будет выводить на главной именно их.
- Есть поддержка плагинов, правда запускаются они не кнопочкой типа “Активировать”, а ручной вставкой кода подключения плагина в нужное место в шаблоне.
- Можно настраивать мета-заголовку и использовать ЧПУ, что несомненно полезно для SEO.
- Много внимания уделено безопасности.
- Поддерживает XML для экспорта изображений, может пригодится для создания отдельных виджетов и гаджетов.
- Поддержка RSS, Поиск и Быстрый переход и выбор порядка сортировки изображений внутри альбома.
Для работы требует наличия MySQL v3.23, GD1.0 и PHP4.
Помимо этого у Plogger-a есть система комментирования без регистрации пользователя, вписал имя, мыло, домашнюю страничку и оставил коммент. Есть режим слайдшоу, которое будет автоматически или вручную прокручивать картинки. Очень приятные шаблоны включены по умолчанию, сразу после установки можно увидеть красивого вида интерфейс, что выгодно отличает её от других мощных систем галерей у которых дизайн остался со времен динозавров, а нормальные шаблоны найти весьма трудно.
Понятная и удобная админка с красивым интерфейсом, в остальном она схожа со многими другими адним-панелями.
Имеются и минусы, вот те, что я заметил:
- Слабая поддержка локализации
- Неудобная загрузка картинок: либо по одной из админки, либо кучей, но через FTP, а потом выполнение импорта. Также невозможность загрузки изображений обычным пользователям.
- Отсутствие всякого антиспама для защиты комментариев
Однако эта галерея мне очень и очень понравилась. Она идеально подходит для организации веб-альбомов на уже существующем сайте и отлично справляется с функциями средней галереи в самостоятельном режиме. Использовать её или нет, как всегда зависит от целей и задач. Если Plogger для вас слишком мелок – используйте 4images, Copermine и т.п.

My hosting company, Netfirms, has Joomla installed. Joomla is so hideously complicated and slow that I don’t use it much either. All I need is a site that I can update with the ease of a blog, but with more structure than a blog.

This site is great, if a bit slow and clunky. I highly recommend it. I went through most of the CMS software on the site and settled on CMS Made Simple. It has a relatively good WYSIWYG page editor and allows pages to be structured hierarchically. It also has a News module, and other plugins can be installed when needed. It’s like a lighter Joomla (which came with the kitchen sink preinstalled). Plone (NOT on opensourcecms.com) came second, but unfortunately it requires installing software on the server, and with my account I can’t do that.
Configuration of CMS Made Simple is easy.
- Download the tar.gz archive from cmsmadesimple.org
- Extract the tar.gz using tar -zxvf
- Move the cmsmadesimple-x.x.x folder to your web server’s document root
- Open a browser and navigate to your website/cmsmadesimple-x.x.x
- Go through the five step wizard
The only tricky bit of the install is the database setup. Assuming you have MySQL configured and running, you need to create a database and then grant privileges on the database to your user. Step by step instructions are included in the wizard on how to configure MySQL.
Since I have hosting, I had to create a database using the admin app of my hosting company. I then added a user, but CMS Made Simple errored out trying to create tables. I had to create an admin user, and log in to the database through PhpMyAdmin before CMS Made Simple (and later, plogger) worked. CMS Made Simple lets you just keep trying new user names/passwords, etc until the database part works (unlike a lot of enterprise software that bombs out if you mistype one letter).
You can access the admin pages for CMS Made Simple by navigating to http://yourwebsite.com/cmsmadesimple-x.x.x/admin
I added a handful of static pages right away, and disabled the default pages.
My only other difficulty was in installing themes. I looked for themes on google, and found several in zip files. I tried uploading them to the Theme Manager (in the menu bar after you log in as an admin), but got an error about ‘DTD Version Mismatch.’ Actually, the Theme Manager only accepts XML files. Where are the images, etc? The theme author may have done one of two things:
- Wrote an XML file, and included resources such as images in the same zip file. You will need to unpack the zip file and upload the resources to the directories specified in the readme file that came with theme. Is the readme missing? Place the theme in your recycle bin because I have no idea what to do with these files.
- Wrote an XML file, and embedded the resources in the file as ASCII data. This is great, because all you need to do is use the Theme Manager’s import button to load the XML file. Away you go.
I tried out two themes, «Grass Stains», «Andreas00» and «Flowered.» Grass Stains worked just fine. andreas00 had issues reading the embedded resources in the XML, and is unuseable. Flowered was a zip file of images, css files, and some other files. The README was terse and unhelpful. After trying to make the thing work I just trashed it.
Onto Plogger. Plogger is really easy to install as well.

- Move to your web server doc root
- Load your browser, and navigate to http://yourwebsite.com/plogger/_install.php
- Follow the wizard to configure plogger
Plogger has less options than even CMS Made Simple. I forget if the wizard had step by step MySQL setup instructions, but if you just finished the CMS Made Simple install, they’re pretty much the same, but you will have a different databaseame, username, and password.
If you forget to type _install.php, plogger’s main page will tell you to go to_install.php.
After the install is complete, you can access plogger’s admin page by navigating to http://yourwebsite.com/plogger/admin
I had trouble logging in using Firefox 1.6 with plogger 2.01 beta. Whenever I tried to type a password, the page refreshed. I had to use IE. I created a collection called «Travel Photos», then an album called «San Diego, March 2007» and then uploaded some pictures. Straightforward.

I have spoken about plogger before. It is what I am currently using for my gallery area.
I am now going to go over some simple instructions on how to make plogger look like your WordPress theme, like I have.
Step 1Download Plogger and extract the files.
Step 2Upload files to a folder on your site, I put mine in /gallery to make things easy.
Step 3Install Plogger as is given in the instructions that come with the software.
To install, upload all of the files in the Plogger distribution to your Web server. Then, run the _install.php script from the Web browser of your choice. That script should guide you through the rest of the installation process.
Step 4Open Plogger’s index.php file.Inside you should find some basic code. We are only really concerned with three important lines.require(«gallery.php»);the_gallery_head(); ?>the_gallery();
These lines are what runs Plogger and these are what need to be integrated into a new index.php file.
Step 5With whatever theme you are currently running, copy/download and then open the head.php and index.php files. These are going to be merged into the index.php file for Plogger.
For the theme I use, blix, I went to /wp-content/themes/blix/ and copied the head.php and index.php files to my computer.
Step 6Create a new file. We are going to name this index.php. This will be our new Plogger index that we are going to make.
Step 7On the first line put:<?php require(‘../wp-blog-header.php’);
This will tell the new index.php file to head up one folder to grab wp-blog-header.php, a very important file.
If for some reason you installed Plogger somewhere else you will need to have the relative path so that the require will work. i.e. if Plogger was installed in /images/gallery you would need to change the code to:<?php require(‘../../wp-blog-header.php’);So that it would go up two directories and grab wp-blog-header.php.
Step 8On line two put:require(«gallery.php»); ?>
This is one of three files needed to run Plogger.
Step 9After those two lines, copy in your header.php file from your template.
Step 10Before the </head> put:<?php the_gallery_head(); ?>
This is the second of the three files needed to run Plogger.
Step 11Now after where you copied in your header file, copy in your theme’s index.php file.
Step 12In a section that has your post information (usually contained in a div that might be div class=”entry” or div class=”post”) delete all of what is contained in that div and replace it with:<?php the_gallery(); ?>
This is the final part of the Plogger code.
Step 13Save your new index.php and upload it to where you installed Plogger. So for me, I uploaded it to /gallery.
Step 14Take a look and see if it worked.
The main overview of this tutorial is to basically make a template file to replace index.php in Plogger that has the same code as your current theme, and includes the three files for Plogger to run, where Plogger needs them to be.
